Arctic Science Interests
Formerly, Director of the Arctic Gas and Aerosol Sampling Program (AGASP) from 1982 to 1992. The AGASP program focused on the study of Arctic haze and related phenomena through research flights in highly instrumented aircraft on missions covering the Arctic Basin. In the peak of the program in 1986, five research aircraft from four different countries coordinated measurements with each other and the baseline stations at Barrow, Alaska; Alert. Canada; and Ny Alesund, Spitzbergen. Over 250 reviewed papers resulted from the AGASP program along with four International conferences and three books. Other projects have included research in north-eastern Siberia (Bennet Island Plume Study), and various other activities in the Russian Arctic. Current arctic activities are mainly associated with the Barrow, Alaska Baseline Observatory including overall responsibility for the station, and scientific interest in boundary layer ozone depletion discovered on the AGASP program.
