Mike Gill
Mike is the Chair of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Programme (CBMP), an Arctic Council Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group program led by Canada. Over the past two decades, Mike has been designing and implementing research and monitoring programs in Scandinavia, Scotland, Canada, the United States and across the entire Arctic. Mike's formal background is in Ornithology but, as a dilettante, he likes to dabble in a multitude of projects, from operating an International Tundra Experiment site to leading a group of Species at Risk biologists to working collaboratively with Aboriginal organizations and communities on caribou management and community-based monitoring.
The CBMP is an international network of scientists and local resource users working together to improve detection, understanding, reporting and response to important trends and pressures on the Arctic's living resources. The CBMP has over 60 global partners and 700 members to date. A number of international organizations including the Convention on Biological Diversity have recognized the CBMP as providing the Arctic component of global biodiversity monitoring and reporting.
When not working, Mike can be found exploring the wilds of Northern Canada (by ski, canoe or bike) where he makes his home with his wife, two kids and dog.
